Improving Writing Skills

Writing for kids, creative writing ideas

Help you child in improving their writing skills

If your children have good writing skills, they will have a much easier time and get better grades in school.

Some useful tips to teaching good writing skills that will encourage your children and last a lifetime.

--Read to your children...read, read, read: from an early age. Readers turn into writers.

--When your child is a toddler, point out letters to them. Sing them the ABC's and, as soon as they are able to, teach them how to sing them.

--Have your young children tell you a story and write it down. Staple it into a book for them that they can keep. Show them that their words can make a story.

--Encourage your child to make lists and write things down.

--As soon as they are old enough, help them to start keeping a journal.

--Teach them about great books and literature, start with the children's classics.

--When they are coloring, have them try and copy letters that you write for them.

--Help them find a pen pal that they can write letters to or e-mail. This will get them into the habit of writing often.

--If they are having trouble with writing or understanding, help them or find them a tutor. Don't let bad habits or lack of writing continue...once you go down this path, it is hard to get back on track.

--Tell them how the movies they love and video games they love all started with the written word. This shows them that writing is everywhere.

--Cut out pictures from magazines and have them write a story to go along with the picture.

--If your children enjoy writing, try submitting their stories to a children's literature magazine or web-site. Once they see their name in print, they'll be hooked! And you'd would be proud too !

Homework, if used correctly, can be quite an effective tool for increasing student achievement.
Unfortunately, as many teachers know, getting students to complete homework can be a frustrating task to say the least.
Teachers try all sorts of strategies to help students complete homework.
Unfortunately, despite when it comes to checking/collecting homework the next day we see the same old thing…many students simply do not do the homework, or they don’t complete the homework.
Usually, at this point, teachers start assigning detention, making phone calls home etc.
However, one homework strategy that is often overlooked is getting parents involved with your homework policy from the beginning. No, I don’t mean just letting them know the percentage of the grade and the consequences for incomplete homework, but rather what the parents can do to help their child complete the homework.
Here’s a list of some homework strategies that teachers can share with their students’ parents:
1. Set up a consistent place for homework to be done. Homework should be done in the same place every night – not on the couch one night, at the dinner table the next, and the bedroom the following night.
2. Organize your homework spot to maximize efficiency. Have a box with everything your child might need to complete any given homework assignment…pencils, erasers, glue, scissors, markers, paper etc. This will greatly reduce homework procrastination.

3. Help your child establish a consistent schedule for completing homework. Depending on the child’s after school schedule, it may not be possible to do the homework at the same time every night. Therefore, it may be wise to sit down Sunday night each week and create the homework schedule for the upcoming week.

4. Do not sit with your child and do the homework together. The purpose of the homework is for your child to practice what he or she has learned in class. If your child cannot do the homework by herself then you need to contact the teacher.

5. After your child completes the homework, discuss it…What did he or she learn from the homework? What steps were easy? Difficult?

6. Your child should spend roughly 10 minutes per grade level on homework. For example, a 2nd grader should spend 20 minutes on homework while an 8th grader should spend 80 minutes. Again, if your child continues to consistently spend more time than this on homework make sure to contact your child’s teacher.

Many parents are just not aware of the best way to help their child complete the homework. By providing a list of helpful homework tips for parents, teachers will see an increase in homework completion and therefore, an increase in academic achievement.

How to teach your child good reading habits

Teaching your child good reading habits can help them their entire life. Here are some ideas on how to teach your child good reading habits.

Instructions

First designate a reading area. This should be a comfortable and quiet space. If possible, have your child pick it out, so they feel it is their "special" spot.
Step2
Next, set a book shelf or book area. The child's special spot can be set up to house a small book collection, if space allows. If "special" spot does not allow for the book collection, try to find a space that can hold your child's book collection. It is important to have a variety of books as an option.
The book collection, can be current library books or owned. If you have both, try to separate them, so library books do not get lost.
Step3
Encourage your child to pick several books that interest them and are at their reading level. You can ask your child's teacher what level your child is reading at, or what books may be suggested.
Step4
Designate a specific amount of time everyday and specific time frame everyday when your child will read. Example: Kindergarten-2nd grade should be about 15 minutes, 3rd-5th should be 30 minutes and so on. Note some schools have a set time requirements, which should be followed.
Step5
Encourage your child to share what they have read to you. You can do this by having them read to you or by having then summarize what they have read when they are done.
Step6
Set an example, by taking the time to reading a book as well, while your child is reading. This will help them to know you enjoy it and find it important.
